I'm so proud to be participating in PiBoIdMo for the second time (and now PiBoIdMo is called Storystorm). This blog post is all about how you can find inspiration by changing up your perspective. It also prominently features Pringles. Intrigued? Click here.
I can't believe that the Huffington Post even noticed Marta Big and Small, let alone named it an Honorable Mention in their Best of Perspective category in the Best Picture Books of 2016 list! Want to see it for yourself? Click this link and scroll down until you see a cat made of lots of dots.
Knopf has put together an absolutely fabulous poster for Lady Liberty's Holiday! The front features my absolute favorite spread from the book while the back has great classroom activities, like creating your own "Missing" poster for the Statue of Liberty and coming up with a new place for Lady Liberty to visit. Love it!
Check it out! Here's the cover for Lady Liberty's Holiday, coming to bookstores near you in May!
And look at how terrific the rest of the cover is, too, with the flaps and the back cover . . .
Hooray! Knopf will be publishing my new picture book Sleep Tight, Snow White in 2017! Mother Goose meets the Brothers Grimm as different fairy tale and nursery rhyme characters--from Snow White to Little Boy Blue--get ready for bedtime.
Wow! Not only did Scholastic Book Clubs feature 100 Snowmen as their Book of the Month for January in the SeeSaw book club, but they also created a three-page activity booklet! I particularly love the counting by 1s, 2s, and 5s page. Click here to see all the activities.
I found out yesterday that Besos for Baby has been selected for the Texas Library Association's 2015 2 x 2 Reading List! It's a list of recommended titles for kids from age 2 to 2nd grade--kind of the little sister list to the Texas Bluebonnet Award. I'm so excited. Thank you, Texas librarians!
For Day 7 of PiBoIdMo, I wrote a guest post on inspiration, inspired by George Stanley, an author I worked with as an editor. George always came up with great ideas for kids books, and in his honor, I came up with "The George Stanley Idea Generator," a shortcut to mashing up topics to find new picture book ideas! Check out the PiBoIdMo blog post here.
Last Thursday I got to share a table at the Jamaica Center Kids Reading Series with Angela Dominguez, who's illustrating my upcoming bilingual picture book Marta Big and Small! Angela is super-talented and has written and illustrated several fantastic books, including Maria Had a Little Llama, which won a Pura Belpré Honor. I'm so excited to see her art for Marta! Click here to check out Angela's website.
You've heard of NaNoWriMo, right? Well, PiBoIdMo is the picture book version--authors are challenged to come up with one picture book idea for every day of the month of November. This year I'll definitely be participating, AND I'm even guest blogging for the event on Day 7! For more information and to register, click here.
If you're in Brooklyn on Sunday September 21st, come to the Brooklyn Book Festival! I'll be moderating a panel on early chapter books at noon that features an amazing group of authors: Jill Santopolo, Lenore Look, and Jon Scieszka! For more information, click here.
Today is the book birthday for Besos for Baby and yesterday it got an early birthday present. Besos is featured in the ABC Best Books of 2014 catalog! Pick up a catalog at your local bookseller and keep an eye out for Besos!
Have you ever wondered if it was possible to make a career by freelancing? Just how do you keep the income flowing in? Here's my biggest piece of advice--diversify!
Here's some noticias grande (big news!)--Roaring Brook will be publishing my bilingual picture book Marta Big and Small in Spring 2016! Compared to a bug, Marta is very big, compared to an elephant, she is very small, but no matter what kind of animal she meets, Marta is clever, very clever.
I'm so happy to announce that Knopf will be publishing my picture book Lady Liberty's Holiday in Spring 2016! What's it about? A few days before the Fourth of July, the Statue of Liberty puts down her torch and tablet to travel across America. But will she come back in time for the holiday?
Here's the announcement in Publishers' Weekly Children's Bookshelf:
Besos for Baby is coming out in September, but this spread feels like Spring to me!
